This book addresses a gap in the existing textbooks on materials science. In order to meet the needs of the broad materials community, this book takes a fully interdisciplinary approach to discuss fundamental principles in the context of the current applications and research to which they apply. Topics covered include chemical structure, thermodynamics, mechanics, tribology, and physics of polymeric materials. The book not only covers the broad categories of metals, polymers, and ceramics but also introduces organic raw materials, composites, and smart materials among others--topics often hardly mentioned in other introductory books.
